During a recent webinar I shared method details for mycotoxin analysis on the SCIEX 7500 system. In this blog i will share the Q&A for the submitted questions that we did not have chance to answer during the live webinar.
The rising tide of food allergies: Common questions and crucial insights
Allergy policies for nut-free commercial flights and nut-free childcare settings are not a rare occurrence nowadays—the reason is a rise in food allergies. Nuts are the most potent allergenic foods in terms of the amount that is required to elicit an allergic reaction and the severity of those reactions.
Omics in the rapidly developing field of alternative proteins: innovation and safety
On June 12, 2023, during a webinar hosted by New Food, Lin Qingsong—Principal Research Fellow and Director of the Protein and Proteomics Centre at the National University of Singapore—discussed the latest considerations related to risk assessment of alternative proteins.
Take out the PFAS in our takeout
Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) were first detected in wildlife1 and oceanic waters2 in the early 2000s. Recently, however, these chemicals have been found in school uniforms,3 cosmetics4 and food contact materials,5 shifting what was initially considered an environmental issue to a public health crisis. As concerns have grown about the toxicological impact of long-term PFAS exposure on human health, questions about food-borne exposure have surged, especially since these chemicals are used in disposable food packaging materials, non-stick cookware and even in food processing machinery.
Eliminate chick culling with innovative technology
While it sometimes seems questionable whether humanity and modern technology can coexist, technological advances in science can help pave the way to more compassionate business practices.
Meat vs plant based. What is the best option?
As we become more conscious about the planet, healthier lifestyles and our duty to protect the environment, attitudes and behaviours are shifting when it comes to food consumption.
Testing for pesticides in cannabis and hemp
As we all know pesticide and mycotoxin testing regulations differ in each state. The applicable pesticides used can differ by crop (hemp vs. cannabis) and pesticide effectiveness on cannabis and hemp in the first place is currently in doubt. Inside the laboratory, different extraction methods can lead to different recoveries and different instrumentation will have different detection limits.
Cannabis, sports and the World Anti-Doping Agency
We’ve all heard about the doping scandal that shocked the cycling world at the 1998 Tour de France, right? Well, because of that scandal, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) arranged a World Conference on Doping that brought together all parties involved in the fight against doping. The Lausanne Declaration on Doping in Sport1 was adopted by the conference in February 1999 and included a call for an international anti-doping agency to be operational for the 2000 Olympics in Sydney. The World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) was established in November 1999 to answer that call.
The future of prebiotics and oligosaccharides in formula milk
Now for part two of my interview with Dr. Wesley Zandberg. Here we spoke about milk oligosaccharides in formula vs human milk, how many there could be and what their future use looks like. Read on to find out what we discussed.
The importance of human milk oligosaccharides (HMOs): prebiotics in milk and milk products
Recently, I had the pleasure of talking to Dr. Wesley Zandberg, Assistant Professor at the University of British Columbia, who completed his PhD and post-doctorate work at Simon Fraser University. While working on projects aimed at developing inhibitors for the enzymes that break down complex carbohydrates, Wesley was introduced to the challenges associated with analyzing the surprisingly complex range of carbohydrates found in nature. Students in the Zandberg lab are now focused on developing improved analytical methods for glycobiology.
