Take out the PFAS in our takeout

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) were first detected in wildlife1 and oceanic waters2 in the early 2000s. Recently, however, these chemicals have been found in school uniforms,3 cosmetics4 and food contact materials,5 shifting what was initially considered an environmental issue to a public health crisis. As concerns have grown about the toxicological impact of long-term PFAS exposure on human health, questions about food-borne exposure have surged, especially since these chemicals are used in disposable food packaging materials, non-stick cookware and even in food processing machinery.

As we all know pesticide and mycotoxin testing regulations differ in each state. The applicable pesticides used can differ by crop (hemp vs. cannabis) and pesticide effectiveness on cannabis and hemp in the first place is currently in doubt. Inside the laboratory, different extraction methods can lead to different recoveries and different instrumentation will have different detection limits.

Cannabis, sports and the World Anti-Doping Agency

We’ve all heard about the doping scandal that shocked the cycling world at the 1998 Tour de France, right? Well, because of that scandal, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) arranged a World Conference on Doping that brought together all parties involved in the fight against doping. The Lausanne Declaration on Doping in Sport1 was adopted by the conference in February 1999 and included a call for an international anti-doping agency to be operational for the 2000 Olympics in Sydney. The World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) was established in November 1999 to answer that call.

Recently, I had the pleasure of talking to Dr. Wesley Zandberg, Assistant Professor at the University of British Columbia, who completed his PhD and post-doctorate work at Simon Fraser University. While working on projects aimed at developing inhibitors for the enzymes that break down complex carbohydrates, Wesley was introduced to the challenges associated with analyzing the surprisingly complex range of carbohydrates found in nature. Students in the Zandberg lab are now focused on developing improved analytical methods for glycobiology.
